A popular shawarma vendor known as Benjamin, or Benji, was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen suspected to be cultists at Ebutte-Ipakodo in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening around 8:30 p.m. while Benjamin was serving customers at his roadside stall, Chibest Shawarma.
Eyewitnesses reported that two men approached Benjamin under the guise of customers before suddenly pulling out guns and shooting him multiple times at close range. Samson, a local resident, said, “He was attending to some customers when two guys walked up to him. At first, we thought they came to buy shawarma, but then, they suddenly pulled out guns and shot him multiple times at close range. Everyone on the spot and those who heard the gunshots ran for their lives. We learnt the gunmen were rival cultists who came on a revenge mission.”
Another source, who preferred anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the attack, revealed that Benjamin was left bleeding on the ground for some time as the chaotic aftermath prevented immediate medical attention. He was eventually rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Social media tributes described Benjamin as hardworking and friendly, well-liked in the community. The attack has caused widespread shock and panic in the area. Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, for comment were unsuccessful.
This killing is part of a broader pattern of cult-related violence in Lagos, including a recent incident in Ebute Metta where a 16-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet during a cult clash following a peace walk organized by youths.
