The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled Friday for the judgment on the Kano state governorship election appeals.

This follows the court’s decision to reserve judgment after hearing the appeals on December 21.

The anticipated judgment encompasses several other cases, with six additional verdicts expected to be delivered on the same day.

The Kano state governorship election petition tribunal, in September, nullified the victory of the incumbent governor, deducting 165,663 votes due to irregularities with the ballot papers.

The tribunal declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the election.

Unsatisfied with the tribunal’s decision, the Nigeria National Party (NNPP) and its candidate contested the judgment at the court of appeal. On November 17, the appellate court upheld the tribunal’s ruling and added that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP when he contested the election.

However, the verdict sparked controversy when a certified true copy (CTC) of the appeal court judgment emerged, revealing contradictory rulings on the NNPP candidate. The court later attributed the inconsistencies to a “clerical error.”

In response to the contentious judgment, the NNPP filed a notice of appeal before the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the decision of the appellate court.

Simultaneously, the APC filed a cross-appeal at the apex court, challenging the lower court’s refusal to acknowledge that Yusuf submitted a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
