As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Day, Spotify is joining the celebrations with a special campaign titled “The Sounds of Nigeria”, designed to honor the nation’s rich musical heritage, which has long been a unifying force and a source of pride for Nigerians.

Starting from Sunday, September 29th, until Thursday, October 3rd, music lovers will be able to explore dedicated music destinations within the Afro and Afrobeats hubs on Spotify.

The campaign offers a journey through various curated playlists, each spotlighting different aspects of Nigerian music culture.

These destinations include:

  • Good Old Naija Days, a nostalgic trip featuring classic hits from legendary Nigerian artists that have shaped the nation’s musical landscape.
  • Naija No Dey Carry Last, celebrating the resilience and spirit of Nigerian music, showcasing songs that have inspired and uplifted the country.
  • Naija New School, highlighting the latest sounds and hottest new acts driving the Nigerian music industry forward.
  • The Sounds of Nigeria, which focuses on the diverse musical traditions that shape the identity of the nation.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, commented on the initiative: “Nigerians have always had a deep love for music, and their resilient spirit shines through in the global success of Nigerian artists. Spotify is honored to celebrate a nation that continues to make Africa proud, amplifying the sounds and stories that resonate far beyond its borders.”

To further enhance the campaign experience, Spotify is collaborating with content creator and DJ Justin UG for a takeover of the Internet Famous playlist. Known for his creative content and deep connection to Nigerian music and culture, Justin UG will introduce new sounds and perspectives to a wider audience.

In addition to the curated music destinations, Spotify will introduce two new playlists:

  • Naija Gospel Throwback, celebrating classic Nigerian gospel anthems.
  • Nigerian Highlife, featuring the upbeat rhythms and catchy melodies that define the vibrant genre of Highlife music.

Join Spotify’s The Sounds of Nigeria campaign to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Day. Discover new music, connect with favorite artists, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Nigerian music.
