The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has assured that there are no potential threats to Nigerians living in or visiting the nation, ahead of the CAF African Cup of Nations semi-finals match between Nigeria and South Africa.

This assurance comes in response to a statement issued by the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, advising caution to the Nigerian community due to inflammatory online comments made by some South African citizens.

In its advisory, the Nigerian High Commission urged Nigerians to be vigilant of their surroundings, particularly in public places, and to refrain from engaging in provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles emerge victorious in the match.

However, DIRCO expressed disagreement with the Nigerian High Commission’s advisory, emphasizing that South Africa poses no threat to Nigerian citizens.

“We are confident that the sports-loving nation of South Africa poses no threat to Nigerian citizens, and we do not agree with the apprehension expressed by the High Commission,” stated the DIRCO.

“The advisory is regrettable because it seems to create alarm and unnecessary tension between the citizens of South Africa and Nigerians living in or visiting South Africa.”

Today’s match marks the fourth encounter between the two teams in the tournament, with Nigeria having won all three previous games. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. Nigerian time.
