Thousands of residents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, and parts of Jere local government area have been left stranded and displaced following the collapse of a dyke and the overflow of Alau Dam, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city.

The incident has resulted in significant flooding that has impacted numerous communities.

The situation escalated since last week when the Borno State Government, led by Secretary to the Government Bukar Tijjani, assessed the condition of the dam and initially reassured the public there was no cause for alarm.

However, despite assurances, the overflow has continued, affecting areas since Monday evening.

The floodwaters have inundated several key locations including the Shehu’s Palace, Monday Market, Post Office area, Gwange, Moromoro Customs Bridge, Zoo, Bulabullin, and other areas, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property.

In neighboring Yobe state, the situation is also dire. Only five local government areas remain accessible from the state capital, Damaturu.

These areas are Nangere, Potiskum, Fika, Fune, and Gujba. Conversely, twelve other local government areas, including Nguru, Jakusco, Gashua, and Gaidam, are completely cut off due to flooding which has destroyed bridges, roads, houses, and resulted in the loss of property worth billions of naira.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Borno State Command, ASP Kenneth Daso, issued a statement on Tuesday morning urging the public to exercise caution: “Following the devastating effect of flooding, citizens are advised to avoid flooding routes and stay in safer areas as Police and other relevant government agencies are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of lives and property.”
