Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory in the Nigerian Senate under the Labour Party (LP), has issued a formal statement commending the recent pronouncement by the Supreme Court. The Senator lauded the ruling as an affirmation of the principles of internal democracy and the autonomy of political parties within the nation’s legal framework.

In her statement, released earlier today, Senator Kingibe noted that the apex court’s decision constitutes “a clear affirmation of the rule of law and a reinforcement of democratic values at a critical juncture in our party’s trajectory.” She further posited that the judicial pronouncement presents the Labour Party with a significant opportunity to foster internal cohesion and strategically reposition itself for future electoral success.

“The judgement provides the Labour Party with a much-needed opportunity to unite under purposeful and capable leadership,” Senator Kingibe asserted. In this context, she expressed her confidence in the competence and stabilizing influence of the Caretaker Committee currently under the stewardship of Senator Nenadi Usman.

Senator Kingibe emphasized the significance of this period, characterizing it as a “pivotal moment to rebuild trust within the party, reestablish our organizational structures, and lay a robust foundation for a stronger, more focused political movement.” She underscored that the ongoing leadership transition offers a distinct opportunity to recalibrate the party’s strategic direction, firmly grounding it in principles of transparency, internal unity, and the overarching interests of its membership and broader base of supporters.

A key aspect of Senator Kingibe’s statement addressed the integral role of the “Obidient movement” in shaping the future trajectory of the Labour Party. “Crucially, the integration of the Obidient movement into the Labour Party is not only welcome—it is essential,” she stated, acknowledging the dynamism and unwavering commitment of the movement’s adherents.
