In a powerful call to action shared via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reaffirmed her dedication to promoting gender equality and expanding women’s roles in governance across Nigeria.
Senator Kingibe’s message resonates amid mounting calls for inclusive leadership and structural reforms within the country’s political landscape.
“I have always been a staunch advocate for women’s inclusion in governance and decision-making. My commitment to gender equality is unwavering because I believe a society thrives when women are actively involved in shaping policies and leading initiatives,” Kingibe stated.
She emphasized the urgent need for legislative reforms to ensure women’s active participation in politics, stressing that their voices must be effectively represented in leadership roles.
Highlighting the importance of transforming political party structures, Kingibe urged parties to adopt policies that guarantee female representation in delegate selections.
“It is imperative that we take legislative action to secure women’s participation in politics. Mandating female inclusion in party delegate selections is not only about fairness; it’s about ensuring that the voices of half our population are heard in leadership spaces,” she said.
Kingibe also addressed the persistent challenges women encounter within governmental systems, pointing out that societal expectations and fear often discourage women from asserting their leadership roles.
“Beyond policy discussions, I have consistently highlighted the barriers women face within governmental frameworks. Many women in leadership hesitate to speak out due to societal pressure or fear. This must change,” she emphasized.
The senator advocated for structural reforms, including the creation of special seats for women and enforcing policies aimed at achieving at least 35% female representation in governance.
“We need structural reforms, including special seats for women and enforcing laws to guarantee at least 35% representation in governance. It’s time to dismantle deep-rooted gender stereotypes and cultural barriers that have sidelined women for too long,” Kingibe asserted.
Referencing global efforts toward gender equality, Kingibe noted discussions from the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), where global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, underscored the importance of women’s leadership.
“At the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), leaders around the world reiterated the need for more women in leadership. The UN’s progress toward gender parity among senior leadership demonstrates that when women are given the opportunity, they lead with excellence and impact,” Kingibe remarked.
Kingibe, who participated in the Nigeria Women’s Day event at CSW69, emphasized that her advocacy for gender parity remains unwavering.
“Taking part in the Nigeria Women’s Day event at CSW69 is another step in my relentless campaign for gender equality. This fight is not just about women; it’s about building a more just and prosperous society for everyone,” she said.
She concluded her message with a powerful rallying cry for Nigerian women to boldly pursue leadership roles and actively contribute to policy-making.
