The Senate has declared the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, persona non grata, saying he is unfit to occupy public office in Nigeria and abroad.

The upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly made this declaration due to the refusal of the police boss to appear before the senate after three summonses.

Senate President Bukola Saraki read the declaration after a closed-door session on Wednesday.

“We need to take a very drastic action. We cannot take this embarrassment any longer. This is a national disgrace,” Senator Emmanuel Bwacha had earlier said.

The Senate had invited Idris to appear at plenary to explain what the police were doing about the incessant killings in Benue, Zamfara and Taraba states.

The senators, it was also learned, are unhappy with the alleged maltreatment of their colleague Senator Dino Melaye (APC/Kogi West).

During the first summons, Idris delegated a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) to represent him, saying he was on a two-day visit with President Muhammadu Buhari to Bauchi.

As a result, the Senate President said, ”Sending his DIG here today is not respectful enough, he (IGP) should have had the respect of this institution to reach the Chairman or myself to explain.

“Distinguished colleagues, we have taken the contributions and the general consensus is that we give a specific date, Wednesday 2nd May 2018 11 am, for the IG of Police to appear.”

But he, still, failed to honour the summons, noting that he was on an official assignment in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna state.
