The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a stern warning to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, indicating the possibility of impeachment if necessary to uphold constitutional integrity.

Speaking at a media briefing in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Speaker Martin Amaewhule, accompanied by 26 fellow lawmakers, reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to constitutional governance and accountability.

The feud between Governor Fubara and the assembly, reportedly fueled by differences with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has escalated since last October. Amaewhule accused Fubara of breaching the Abuja peace agreements, highlighting grievances such as governing without an approved budget and flouting the rule of law.

Furthermore, Amaewhule criticized the former Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council, led by Dr. Abiye Sekibo, for allegedly attempting to undermine the Assembly’s authority through media campaigns and lobbying.

Despite initial attempts to impeach Fubara being withdrawn in deference to President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, the Assembly now suggests that impeachment remains on the table if the governor continues to defy constitutional norms and governance procedures.

The Speaker emphasized the Assembly’s obligation to uphold the rule of law and protect the interests of Rivers State citizens, emphasizing that no individual, including the governor, is above the law.

Fubara’s administration has faced mounting scrutiny, with accusations of operating outside legal frameworks and failing to address critical issues such as the absence of an appropriation law.
