River Swallows 18-seater Bus With Passengers In Ijebu-ode,Ogun-state.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed an incident about the immersion of an 18-seater commercial bus into a river in Ogun state on Thursday, October 15.

The bus had an unspecified number of passengers who may have drowned following the plunging of the bus into the Arun River at Ogbere, near Ijebu Ode in the state.

In line with the confirmation by the NEMA public information officer, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed in Lagos that rescue operation had begun.

He said: “A report has just reached NEMA that an 18-seater bus plunged into Arun River at Ogbere, after Ijebu Ode in Ogun state.

“NEMA, in strong partnership with the Ogun state government, Ijebu East local government council, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Nigerian police have mobilised local volunteers and divers to begin recovery of the victims.”

He noted, however, that only two bodies had been recovered from the scene.

However, there are reports that this incident is the first to have vehicle plunge into the Arun River. It was said that there had been similar cases some years back.

In recent times, there have been accidents occurring on both major highways and local roads.
