Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson to ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, was laid to rest on Friday in his hometown of Iperu-Remo, located in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, Okay.ng reports.

Okupe, who passed away in Lagos on March 7, 2025, at the age of 72, was honored with a burial service at Wesley Methodist Church, Nigeria, in Iperu-Remo.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, paid tribute to the late politician, describing him as a courageous and determined individual who faced numerous challenges throughout his life. He highlighted Okupe’s generosity and significant contributions to those around him, emphasizing that he left a lasting impact.

Acknowledging Okupe’s service to the nation, Abiodun praised his dedication to good governance and his role as a vocal advocate for national progress. He noted that Okupe’s devotion to his country, family, and children reflected his deep sense of humanity.

“Dr. Okupe was not just a spokesperson; he was a media expert, an articulate and fearless communicator,” Abiodun remarked. “He was a professional in politics rather than a career politician.”

The ceremony drew dignitaries and well-wishers who gathered to pay their final respects to the seasoned politician and public servant.

“Dr. Okupe was principled, dependable, and unwavering in his convictions. He would not shift his stance under pressure unless he was convinced from within,” Abiodun said.

Governor Abiodun further highlighted that, despite Dr. Doyin Okupe’s firm political convictions, he never allowed his beliefs to overshadow or damage his personal relationships.

“He could take a political stance against you, but that would not stop him from maintaining a good friendship with you. He always drew a clear line between politics and personal relationships,” he added.

Governor Abiodun called on attendees to honor Okupe’s legacy by leading impactful lives and fostering fairness and kindness in their interactions with others.
