For the first time in America‘s history, an Indian lesbian wedding took place with so much celebration and fanfare.

The couple in question are Shannon and Seema, who met for the first time at a boot camp fitness class which Shannon was teaching.

According to Shannon, for her, it was love at first sight.  “I turned to another instructor and said ‘I’m going to marry her’,” she told Buzzfeed.

Her prediction came true six years later, giving birth to the spectacular wedding which was witnessed by family and friends of the couple.

Their colourful wedding was captured on camera by photographer Steph Grant, who specialises in LGBT weddings.

“I have been anticipating this wedding for years now. Shannon and Seema are special to me and I am honored that they chose me to be their wedding photographer,” Grant explains on her website.

She added: “There was so much love that… evening. Friends and family came pouring in with smiles, hugs and tears… these two are clearly loved and in love.”

Keen to include some American wedding traditions in their wedding, Shannon was walked down the aisle by her mother.

Seema, in keeping with Hindu tradition, was carried into her wedding on a Doli by her family.

Their traditional Indian ceremony featured many ancient traditions, including a traditional interpretation of ‘tying the knot’.

The couple also exchanged rings, and although there’s no ‘first kiss’ in an Indian ceremony, Shannon and Seema found time for that later. At the reception, there was time for toasts and their first dance.

And as Grant said, it was clear to see that Shannon and Seema are both very much loved and in love.
