Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has dismissed speculations suggesting that he plans to defect to another party ahead of the 2027 general election.

Rumors have circulated suggesting that Obi might be considering a move to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) amidst the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party.

However, during a chat with Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) Space hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday, Obi unequivocally stated his commitment to the Labour Party.

“I am still a member of the Labour Party, and I don’t and will never do anti-party,” Obi affirmed, dispelling any notions of switching allegiances.

Obi’s firm declaration comes amidst concerns about the cohesion and stability of the Labour Party, which has faced internal challenges in recent times.

In addition to addressing rumors of his party affiliation, Obi also expressed support for the establishment of a structure for the ‘Obidient’ movement, named after his followers.

He emphasized that such movements forming blocs and actively participating in the political process is a standard practice observed worldwide.

“It is the standard practice around the world where movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process,” Obi stated.
