OPay, a leading financial institution in Nigeria, has expanded its N1.2 billion 10-year scholarship scheme to encompass students at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, making OAU the third institution to benefit from this significant educational initiative.

This expansion underscores OPay’s unwavering commitment to education and the empowerment of young Nigerians. According to a statement released by the financial institution, the scholarship program is meticulously designed to alleviate the financial pressures faced by students, enabling them to concentrate on their academic pursuits and personal growth. By extending its reach to OAU, OPay continues its strategic endeavor to invest in the future leaders of Nigeria, particularly within regions known for their diverse academic potential and talent.

Mr. Justin Zhang, OPay’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, emphasized the crucial role of education in national development. “Obafemi Awolowo University has a legacy of producing some of the nation’s brightest minds, and we are proud to support these future leaders as part of our broader commitment to education and empowerment,” he stated, highlighting the company’s dedication to fostering opportunities for students across the nation.

Professor Yomi Daramola, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin) of OAU, expressed profound gratitude for the impactful donation. “The university has long been committed to supporting indigent students, but our efforts can only go so far,” he acknowledged. “This generous donation from OPay marks a significant milestone, going beyond what the alumni have been able to achieve over the years. It provides a crucial safety net, ensuring that students can focus on their education rather than worrying about basic survival. This contribution will have a lasting impact, empowering students to pursue their academic goals with confidence and stability.”

Omoboriowo Isaac, a 600-level student from the Department of Clinical Sciences at OAU, shared his personal experience and the immense relief the scholarship provides. “As a student in the Department of Clinical Sciences with the highest tuition fees at OAU, receiving this scholarship will be a tremendous relief. It will significantly ease the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus on my studies. This support ensures that I can complete my degree and pursue my academic goals with full confidence.”

Witnessing such initiatives brings a sense of hope. These scholarships are more than just financial aid; they are investments in the dreams and potential of young Nigerians. The beneficiaries represent not only themselves but also the aspirations of their families and communities. OPay’s role in facilitating these dreams is commendable.

This milestone follows the successful implementation of the scholarship program at two other prominent universities last year, demonstrating OPay’s consistent commitment to educational advancement. While OAU marks the third beneficiary, OPay has assured the public that its vision encompasses extending this life-changing opportunity to other tertiary institutions nationwide. The scholarship initiative reflects OPay’s fundamental belief in education as a potent catalyst for progress and inclusivity.

As the program continues to expand, students from diverse regions across Nigeria can anticipate benefiting from this transformative initiative, reaffirming OPay’s dedication to unlocking multiple potentials and fostering a brighter future for the youth of Nigeria. This is not just about providing financial assistance; it’s about building a stronger, more educated Nigeria, one student at a time. The impact of such corporate social responsibility initiatives cannot be overstated, and I look forward to seeing the positive ripple effects of this investment in education.
