Dele Momodu, a two-time presidential aspirant and prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, declared on Tuesday that the only way to unseat President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections is through a coalition of political parties.
Speaking during the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State’s monthly programme, “Guest of the Month,” held in Ibadan, Momodu expressed deep concerns about the state of the PDP. He revealed, “My soul has already left the PDP, while only my body remains in the party.”
Momodu emphasized that if the PDP were united, it would possess the capacity to reclaim power from the APC in 2027. However, he lamented the internal and external forces working against the party’s unity. “The APC is jittery of the PDP, noting that it is the only opposition party that can challenge its dominance in 2027. This is one of the reasons why the leadership of the APC at all levels is ensuring that the party is factionalized.”
He further explained that a divided PDP stands no chance against the APC, whose strategy is to weaken the main opposition. “There is no way that a disunited PDP can wrest power from APC in 2027. The ideology of the ruling party is to weaken the main opposition party.”
Momodu also highlighted internal challenges within the PDP, noting that some members work against the party’s stability. However, he reassured that the PDP adheres strictly to due process when dealing with erring members. “It is the law that will stimulate the process of suspending or sacking erring members,” he stressed.
On the broader political landscape, Momodu asserted that removing President Tinubu in 2027 is nearly impossible without a formidable coalition. “Also, whoever would contest favourably against the current president must come from the opposite direction in terms of regions in Nigeria,” he added.
