The National Youth Service Corps has introduced a biometric technology for the corps members’ monthly clearance in South West.

This is supposed to check the excesses of corps members who do not resume to their place of assignment and check the activities of absenteeism and “ghost” corps members.

The deployment of biometric technology in the clearance of corps members will commence in April 2017 in the South-West states.

The Director-General, NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure, made this known on Friday, while declaring open a training programme on the biometric clearance for field officers of the South-West states in Ibadan.

He said this followed successful piloting of the project in the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos State as well as its take-off in the North-West and South-East states.

Kazaure, who was represented by the Director of Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, Mrs. Victoria Okakwu, warned that corps members who miss the bio metric clearance without approval would not be considered for their monthly allowances.

Furthermore, Kazaure stressed the importance of the introduction of “the use of bio-metrics for mobilisation and registration of corps members at orientation camps had helped to fast-track the process, and reduced impersonation and registration of ineligible graduates”.

The Director of ICT, Mrs. Christy Uba, said in her introductory remarks at the event that the biometric clearance system was designed to enhance adequate monitoring and monthly clearance of Corps members including CDS at their places of primary assignment using their fingerprints and personal data.

“It keeps records of absenteeism, and checkmates truancy, impersonation and other vices, which tend to undermine the aims and objectives of the Scheme; hence the need to equip our LGIs with the requisite knowledge of how this module functions,” Uba added.
