The Federal Government has commenced payment of the N77,000 monthly allowance arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fulfilling a promise made after the scheme’s allowance was increased earlier this year, Okay.ng reports.

In September 2024, the government officially approved a new allowance for corps members, raising it from N33,000 to N77,000 following the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024. Although the increase was announced last year, the new rate only took effect from March 2025, leaving a backlog for corps members who concluded their service prior to that date.

Despite initial concerns and rumors suggesting that the outgone corps members might not receive the outstanding payments, authorities had maintained that all qualified ex-corps members would be duly compensated, regardless of their current service status.

Now, it appears the disbursement has begun, as several ex-corps members have taken to social media to confirm receipt of payment.

“This is so amazing I didn’t see it coming. Federal government made a promise and seek to it… Guys I just received my arrears, so if you’re an ex Corper from Batch A1 2024 check your alert,” Mary Joe wrote, sharing a screenshot of her credit alert.

Another ex-corper, Engr Saleesu Sb, posted on Facebook, saying, “I just received 44k in my Globus account. 2024 A1. Is like arrears don dey drop.”

Lumex Philemon, also commenting on Facebook, stated, “Plateau Ex coorper batch A stream 2. Receive mine.”

According to reports, the amount currently being paid is N44,000, which appears to represent only one month of arrears. Many former corps members are believed to be owed approximately three months in total, leaving uncertainty over whether further payments will follow.

So far, the NYSC and federal authorities have not issued an official statement on whether the remaining arrears will be paid in subsequent installments.
