During their meeting in Kaduna on Friday, the nineteen Northern governors collectively contributed N180 million as support for the victims of the devastating Kaduna air incident, which claimed the lives of 85 people and left numerous others injured.

Inuwa Yahaya, the chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, announced the gesture, stating, “We are presenting our support to the victims of Tundun Biri [accident] and the Kaduna state government to further support them.”

Expressing condolences, Gombe’s governor, on behalf of the forum, conveyed prayers for the deceased and those affected, urging adequate compensation for the victims while pledging the donation to aid Kaduna State in assisting the affected individuals.

This philanthropic act follows a prior donation by regional lawmakers in solidarity with the victims.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has launched a probe into the incident, reacting swiftly to the tragic event. Confusion initially surrounded the circumstances, with the Nigerian Navy denying involvement while the Nigerian Army claimed responsibility, with the Chief of Army Staff expressing regret over the incident during his site visit.

President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani have ordered thorough investigations into the incident to uncover its causes and prevent future occurrences. Vice President Kashim Shettima visited victims at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital in Kaduna, reiterating the government’s commitment to holding anyone responsible accountable.

Amidst calls from rights organizations urging a review of military rules of engagement, Vice President Shettima highlighted ongoing efforts directed by the President to conduct a comprehensive investigation aimed at preventing such tragedies in the future.
