NNPC to Obasanjo: Come See Our Rehabilitated Refineries

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended an invitation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to tour its rehabilitated refineries, following his public skepticism about the viability of the $2 billion invested in revamping the facilities.

Obasanjo recently questioned the progress made at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries during a television interview, highlighting historical challenges faced during his administration in attempts to boost Nigeria’s refining capacity.

“I was told not too long ago that since that time, more than two billion dollars have been squandered on the refinery, and they still will not work. If anyone tells you now that it is working, why are they still with Aliko? Aliko will not only make his refinery work but also make it deliver,” Obasanjo remarked, referencing the privately owned Dangote Refinery.

In response, Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC, acknowledged Obasanjo’s stature and contributions as a statesman but emphasized the strides NNPC has made under its current leadership.

“We hold President Olusegun Obasanjo in the highest regard as a statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development. His observations are deeply respected. However, we wish to emphasize that NNPC has undergone a remarkable transformation,” Soneye said.

Soneye explained that the recent refinery rehabilitations represent comprehensive overhauls to meet world-class standards, unlike the less impactful Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) projects of the past. He credited the progress to the leadership of the NNPC board, chaired by Group CEO Mele Kyari, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative energy policies.

He also highlighted NNPC’s shift from a loss-making corporation to a profit-oriented global energy leader.

To address Obasanjo’s concerns and showcase the progress made, Soneye invited the former president to tour the facilities.

“We warmly invite President Obasanjo to tour the rehabilitated refineries. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his guidance. This visit will offer an opportunity to witness the progress we have achieved under NNPC Limited’s leadership,” Soneye said.
