Nigerians on social media are calling for justice for a student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) who died after being raped inside a church of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

The victim, Uwa Omozuwa, on May 27, 2020, was said to have visited the RCCG, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, to read.

Some men were reported to have made their way into the church auditorium where they struck her in the head with a fire extinguisher, raped her and left her for dead.

Ms Omozuwa, 22, was found by the church’s security guard and taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where she narrated her ordeal.

She died three days later.

The case was reported at the Oregbeni Police Station, Benin.

Here are some reactions from Nigerians on Twitter:

Dr. Dipo Awojide said: “Few days ago, #JusticeForTina was trending. Today, it is #JusticeForUwa. The Nigerian state must do all to protect our young girls. Their lives matter and any criminal who attacks and ends it brutally must be brought to justice.”

Ozzy Etomi tweeted: “What is the excuse now? She was in a CHURCH. Women get brutalized, raped and killed while reading in CHURCH.

“This is a societal sickness! Don’t ever let me hear you say shit to justify or exuse rape! I’m so sorry Uwa, you didn’t deserve this. #JusticeForUwa.”

Bmax tweeting via @LifeofBmax said: “Few days ago, we were spreading the word on how an innocent 16 yrs old Tina was shot in Lagos for no reason.

“Now another 22 years old UWA has been raped and brutalized in a RCCG church in Benin and her perpetrators are on the run.

“SPREAD THE WORD GUYS !!! #JusticeForUwa.”
