Niger Delta Militants Attack Police Station, Cart Away Arms, Ammunition In Bayelsa

Armed men suspected to be militants on Friday attacked a police station and a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) in Amasoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The armed robbers, who reportedly came in a speedboat around 1am, engaged policemen in the station and succeeded in overpowering them, The Nation reports.

They succeeded in carting away arms and ammunition, it was gathered.

The late former governor of Bayelsa, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, is from Amasoma, and the Niger Delta University is also located in the community.

After the attack on the police station, the armed robbers reportedly tried unsuccessfully to gain access to the banking hall of the UBA branch.

However, after using “dynamites and bombs”, they were able to cart away an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) installed within the bank premises, but the amount carted away from the ATM has not been established.

They reportedly shot sporadically into the air, making residents of the area and commuters to scamper to safety.

The Bayelsa State Police Command spokesman, Butswat Asinim, said he was yet to be furnished with the details of the attack.
