The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that a new tariff plan for telecom operators will take effect on December 13, 2024.

The initiative aims to simplify telecom offerings and enhance consumer satisfaction.

Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, made the announcement on Thursday, November 28, 2024, in Abuja.

The rollout was initially scheduled for October 27 but was postponed for undisclosed reasons.

According to Maida, the new tariff plan seeks to address consumer concerns by providing clearer options for data and airtime usage, eliminating confusion, and ensuring transparency in the telecom market.

To streamline offerings, telecom operators will be limited to a maximum of seven tariff plans under the new guidelines.

The EVC also addressed concerns regarding rapid data depletion, a common complaint among telecom users.

Maida clarified that telecom operators are not solely responsible for the issue.

“The type of phone used significantly impacts data consumption,” he said, adding that the NCC is actively conducting awareness campaigns to educate consumers about managing data usage and selecting suitable devices.

The new tariff plan, coupled with the consumer education drive, is part of the NCC’s broader strategy to foster a consumer-friendly and transparent telecommunications environment in Nigeria.
