The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has declared that the National Assembly is the most underfunded arm of the Nigerian government, okay.ng reports.
Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday through his representative, Amadi Victor Obuzor, Abbas addressed the launch of three legislative digital platforms by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Abbas challenged the widespread belief that the legislature is overfunded, stating, “Many Nigerians erroneously believe that the National Assembly is overfunded. Sadly, the National Assembly is the most underfunded arm of the government.” He noted that development partners have assessed the Assembly’s finances and reached similar conclusions.
The new digital platforms—PLAC Bills Track, Legislative Agenda Tracker, and Legislative Repository—aim to boost transparency and citizen engagement. They allow users to track bills, access legislation, and view analyses. PLAC’s Deputy Executive Director, Omolara Akinyeye, said the tools would help Nigerians follow legislative processes. Executive Director Clement Nwankwo added that the platforms are designed to enhance oversight and public engagement.
