Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi Central, has expressed delight after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) dismissed a petition seeking her recall from the Senate, Okay.ng reports.
In a statement released earlier on Tuesday, INEC confirmed that the petition failed to meet the constitutional threshold required for a recall process to proceed.
“The number of constituents who signed the recall petition against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan fell short of the constitutional requirement of 50 percent of registered voters in the constituency,” the commission said.
Reacting to the news, the embattled lawmaker took to her Facebook page to celebrate the outcome, describing it as a win for the people of Nigeria.
“On God it’s victory for the people of. One battle down, two more to go,” Akpoti-Uduaghan wrote.
“Deep gratitude to my beloved husband, awesome support team, magnificent people of Kogi Central and great people of Nigeria at large. INEC Nigeria, you did well.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan has faced increasing political pressure in recent weeks, including a recall campaign initiated by her opponents and a temporary suspension from the Senate.
