Nasarawa State has intensified its fight against illegal mining by collaborating closely with security agencies to halt unlawful mining activities across all 13 local government areas. This crackdown follows the state House of Assembly’s concerns over the environmental and social damage caused by illegal mining, especially in Kokona LGA.

At a press briefing in Lafia commemorating Governor Abdullahi Sule’s two-year milestone in his second term, Commissioner Ibrahim Tanko outlined the government’s zero-tolerance policy. “The state government has declared zero tolerance for illegal mining,” he said, underscoring the administration’s objective to ensure the mining sector operates free from illegality.

Tanko elaborated on the threats illegal mining poses: environmental degradation, depletion of natural resources, and economic harm to lawful miners. “Illegal mining not only poses a significant threat to the environment and natural resources in the state but also undermines the livelihoods of countless indigenous miners who abide by the regulatory framework,” he remarked.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of safeguarding mineral-rich communities from infiltration by unauthorized individuals and companies. He called on mining firms to adhere strictly to legal procedures to obtain operational licenses, warning that non-compliance would lead to site closures. “Any mining company coming to Nasarawa State has to go through the necessary processes,” Tanko affirmed.

The government’s partnership with security forces is actively targeting illegal miners for arrest and prosecution. Tanko praised Governor Sule’s achievements since 2019, highlighting his success in attracting investment and creating employment in the mining sector.

He assured that surveillance on mining activities would continue, with strict enforcement of regulations. “We are committed to ensuring that we take our dear state to greater heights, so we will not be distracted in building the Nasarawa State of our dreams,” he said.

Additionally, Commissioner Yakubu Kwanta thanked the governor for approving new mini-stadia projects and applauded the state’s athletes for their outstanding performance at the National Sports Festival, urging them to maintain discipline and dedication.
