Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho appears to have won the race to clinch the signature of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid after persuading the prolific forward he will be a major leader in the attack according to reports in Spain.

Morata has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford after failing to secure a regular first-team place at the Bernebeu last season, even though he still managed to score 20 goals for the La Liga and Champions League winners.

Mourinho is in the market to sign a big money striker and with uncertainty surrounding the future of Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid, the United boss looks to be putting all his efforts in getting a deal to sign Morata over the line.

Spanish newspaper Marca are reporting that Mourinho is believed to have told Morata that United is the perfect fit for him at this stage of his career and he would feel more important playing for Manchester United.

Morata owes a great deal to Mourinho after being handed his first professional contract by the Portuguese coach when he was in charge at Real Madrid.

Although Morata started off as winger, the United manager knows his best position is now playing through the middle and feels he can become the main talisman in their attack next season.

Mourinho has told the 24-year-old the exciting plans he has for the club next season which includes several big signings during the summer after they secured Champions League football.

The first big arrival will be Victor Lindelof from Benfica, while reports in Spain state that Morata has also spoken with Spanish team-mates David De Gea and Ander Herrera over a move to Manchester.

If Morata does secure a big money switch to Old Trafford, his first big game could come against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 8
