The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have criticized the 36 governors for saying they cannot afford to pay the proposed N60,000 minimum wage.

Okay.ng had reported that the governors, through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), stated that they cannot afford the proposed wage and would have to borrow to pay workers every month.

The labour unions described the governors’ comment as “an act of wickedness” and called on them to reconsider their stance.

The labour unions pointed out that the price of fuel, dollar against naira, and other costs have increased astronomically, making the governors’ claim unreasonable.

They also noted that the Federal Allocation Account Committee (FAAC) allocations have increased from N700 billion to N1.2 trillion, making the governments rich at the expense of the people.

The labour unions urged the governors to cut the high cost of governance, minimize corruption, and prioritize workers’ welfare to afford a reasonable national minimum wage.
