Seaman Haruna Abbas, a naval rating, was dismissed from service for disobeying orders, resisting arrest, and destroying service property.

His wife, Hussaina Iliya, had accused the military of unjustly detaining him since 2018, specifically pointing to Brigadier General A.S. Adamu’s involvement. However, according to Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Abbas was found guilty on all counts by a court-martial and dismissed with effect from February 7, 2023.

Abbas’s ordeal began when he interrupted his commander during a parade and refused to report to the guard room, leading to his arrest and resistance, where he expended 16 rounds of ammunition to prevent being taken into custody. Despite claims of mental health issues, medical personnel testified that Abbas was fit to stand trial.

The Northern Elders Forum has called for justice for Abbas, expressing concerns over his alleged “unjust” treatment and demanding a review of his case and rehabilitation support.
