The electrifying encounter between the competition’s two most successful clubs delivered 120 minutes of action-packed drama, including goals, missed chances, a red card, and a penalty save, before the match was decided in a penalty shootout.

How It Happened

Manchester United took the lead in the 52nd minute when Bruno Fernandes finished off a counter-attack with a brilliant strike from the edge of the area. The goal was set up by a lung-busting run and pass from Alejandro Garnacho, giving the visitors the advantage.

However, the game shifted when Diego Dalot received his second yellow card and was sent off for a foul on Mikel Merino. Arsenal capitalized on their numerical advantage two minutes later as Gabriel Magalhães equalized with a deflected shot off Matthijs de Ligt.

The Gunners seemed poised to take control and were awarded a penalty when Kai Havertz went down under minimal contact from Harry Maguire. But Altay Bayindir, Manchester United’s goalkeeper, produced a stunning save to deny Martin Odegaard’s spot-kick.

Arsenal’s frustrations continued as Bayindir made brilliant saves to thwart Declan Rice twice, while Havertz missed a golden chance from six yards out. The game went into extra time after Arsenal failed to capitalize on their chances.

Extra-Time and Penalty Shootout

Both teams pushed for a winner during extra time. Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard had a goal-bound effort deflected over by de Ligt, while United’s Joshua Zirkzee saw his shot saved by David Raya. With no decisive goal, the game moved to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Bayindir replicated his earlier heroics, saving Havertz’s penalty, while Zirkzee calmly netted the winning spot-kick to secure United’s passage to the fourth round.

Post-Match Reactions

The victory marks a significant moment for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United, who showcased resilience despite being down to 10 men. For Arsenal, the loss is a bitter blow, as they exit the FA Cup at the third-round stage for the second consecutive season.

The Red Devils now await their opponent in the fourth-round draw, while Arsenal will turn their focus back to the Premier League.
