Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced that he will unveil his preferred candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election in January 2026. This decision highlights his commitment to influencing the leadership transition in the state.

Governor Makinde has consistently indicated his intent to play a role in choosing his successor. Speaking during the presentation of a public service reform committee report in October 2024, he remarked, “I may not have the final say in who takes over, but I will definitely have my input.” His statement signals his determination to ensure continuity in governance and policies.

In a lighthearted remark, Governor Makinde playfully urged popular socialite Abbas Oloko not to take down his billboard at Isale Alfa.

“I’m not yet a lame duck. Please leave my billboard at Isale Alfa. In January 2026, we know that political activities will start. I will tell you the picture of the person that will be installed there,” Makinde said.

Initially, Makinde hinted at supporting a younger candidate, specifying an age range between 50 and 52. However, after engaging with political stakeholders, he broadened the age bracket.

While addressing the National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters in April 2024, he clarified, “I think I said the person I will support will be between the age bracket 50 to 52… But, let me clarify now, it will now be between 45 years and 55 years, and I think that’s a fair one.”

Makinde’s remarks on influencing his successor have drawn mixed reactions. The African Action Congress (AAC) strongly opposed his stance, arguing that it undermines democratic principles.

Kayode Babayomi, the AAC’s Oyo State Chairman, criticized the governor’s approach, stating, “This statement is not only demeaning but also a threat to our democracy and shows the dictatorial tendencies of the Agodi emperor.”

Within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Makinde has been advocating for party unity and restructuring to strengthen its position for the 2027 elections.
