LP Fractured as Three Claim Leadership After Supreme Court Ruling

The Labour Party (LP), which secured third place in the 2023 general election, has fractured into three competing factions, each vying for control of the party’s leadership and organizational structure. The individuals at the center of this power struggle are Julius Abure, Senator Nenadi Usman, and Lamidi Apapa, all claiming to be the legitimate national leader of the party, okay.ng reports.

This internal crisis has escalated following a recent Supreme Court judgment that overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision recognizing Abure as the party’s national chairman. In a unanimous ruling delivered last week by a five-member panel, the apex court determined that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as the LP’s leader, citing that the core issue of the case pertained to the party’s internal leadership.

Despite this Supreme Court ruling, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party, which is believed to be loyal to Abure, has publicly stated that he remains the party’s national chairman.
