The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially declared Saturday, July 12, 2025, as the date for the highly anticipated local government elections across the state. This announcement, made on Friday by LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Tope Ojo, marks the formal beginning of the electoral process for all 57 council chairmanship and 376 councillorship positions.
These elections will take place across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) within Lagos State. LASIEC is gearing up for the polls as the tenure of the current local council officials approaches its constitutional conclusion, necessitating a smooth and timely transition of power at the grassroots level.
LASIEC’s timetable also includes a contingency plan for potential electoral disputes. According to Mr. Ojo, in the event that a rerun is required in any ward or local council, a supplementary election has been scheduled for the following Saturday, July 19, 2025. This provision aims to ensure that all electoral contests are fairly and conclusively determined.
The announcement from LASIEC signals a significant step towards ensuring democratic governance at the local level in Lagos State. Residents are now awaiting further details from the electoral body regarding the electoral guidelines, voter registration updates, and the timetable for various pre-election activities in the lead-up to July 12.
With the election date now firmly set, political parties and aspiring candidates are expected to intensify their campaigns and preparations to contest for the various elective positions at the local government level. The outcome of these elections will shape governance and development at the grassroots for the coming years in Lagos State.
