The kidnapped lecturer of the University of Port Harcourt, Dr. Reginald Ohiri, regained his freedom on Tuesday night from the hands of his kidnappers.

The victim was said to have been freed by his abductors after they later found out that he was not their target.

Ohiri, who is a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry in UNPORT, was abducted on the eve of Monday from his resident in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The gunmen, who whisked Ohiri away at gunpoint Monday night, later demanded N2 million ransom for his release.

It was gathered when the abductors confirmed that Ohiri was not their target, they allegedly granted him freedom.

As of the time of filing this report, the victim was said to have reported to the Senate block of UNIPORT to relate his freedom to the management of the institution.

Confirming the release on Wednesday, the Management of the University of Port Harcourt, said the lecturer had returned home.

Spokesman for UNIPORT, Dr. William Wodi, stated that the lecturer, who was released Tuesday night, reported to school on Wednesday.

Wodi did not confirm if any ransom was paid before the release, but revealed that the kidnappers informed their victim that his abduction was a case of mistaken identity.

“The man has been released, he left my office a few minutes ago. He was a victim of mistaken identity. That is what the man told me when he came to my office,” Wodi said.
