The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano Emirates Council Law (Repeal Bill) 2024, effectively abolishing the five new emirates established in the state. The law, which was signed into effect on December 5, 2019, by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, had created five distinct emirates: Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.

The repeal bill, sponsored by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, was passed after scaling third reading. The new law sets aside all offices established under the repealed law, and district heads elevated or appointed under the repealed law are required to revert to their previous positions.

The Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment Number 2) Law, 2024, was amended several times, with the most recent amendment signed on April 11, 2023. The law had established the emir of Kano as the chairman of the council, with the governor having the power to grade the office of an emir as first, second, or third class, subject to approval by the House of Assembly.

The repeal of the law marks a significant development in the state’s political landscape, with some observers noting that it may have implications for the state’s traditional institutions.
