The Kaduna State Government is set to commence the construction of a 24-kilometer Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, stretching from Kawo Bridge to Sabon Tasha, in March 2025. This initiative represents a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to modernize its public transportation system and address urban mobility challenges.

Inuwa Ibrahim, the Director General of the Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KADSTRA), confirmed the development during a media briefing on Friday. He highlighted the project’s potential to reduce traffic congestion and enhance transportation efficiency across the state. The groundbreaking ceremony for the BRT project’s Southern Terminal is scheduled for March 11 at the Kaduna Line depot.

“Kaduna State is on the brink of a major transformation in public transportation as Governor Uba Sani initiates the long-awaited Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) project. This initiative is designed to decongest city roads and improve urban mobility, marking a significant step toward modernizing the state’s transportation infrastructure,” Ibrahim stated.

The BRT corridor will feature dedicated lanes, strategically located bus stations, and modern shelters, providing residents with safer and more reliable transportation options. The project aims to streamline public transit, reduce travel times, and enhance the overall commuting experience.

In preparation for the project, a delegation from KADSTRA visited the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in January 2025 to study best practices in BRT procurement and operations. This visit was part of Kaduna State’s efforts to ensure the successful implementation of its BRT system.

The Kaduna BRT project, which has faced delays in the past, has gained renewed momentum under Governor Uba Sani’s administration. In 2023, the state government approved N97 million as counterpart funding, followed by a N699 million allocation in the 2024 budget to accelerate progress. The 2025 budget has allocated N30 billion, with N5 billion designated as additional counterpart funding.

KADSTRA is collaborating with the French Development Agency (AFD), a global financier of sustainable development initiatives, to execute the project. Once completed, the BRT system is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, improve road safety, and promote environmental sustainability in Kaduna.

Ibrahim urged residents to support the initiative, emphasizing that the project would stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and introduce a structured, modern, and efficient transport system. He also noted that Kaduna’s approach could serve as a model for other states seeking to develop sustainable urban mobility solutions.

The Kaduna BRT project underscores the state government’s commitment to enhancing public transportation and improving the quality of life for its residents. With the groundbreaking ceremony set for March 11, the project is poised to transform Kaduna’s urban landscape and set a new standard for public transit in Nigeria.
