The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament got underway with Ivory Coast, the host nation, securing a resounding 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium in Abidjan on Saturday.

Ivory Coast’s Seko Fofana initiated the host nation’s title pursuit with an early goal, and Jean-Philippe Krasso’s second-half strike sealed a decisive win in the Group A match.

The game witnessed a lightning start as Fofana skillfully received Franck Kessie’s pass in the box, deftly evading the attention of two defenders before unleashing a shot into the far corner.

Fofana’s dynamic play also saw him striking the crossbar with another attempt, although Ivory Coast couldn’t further extend their lead by halftime.

In the second half, Guinea-Bissau, a settled side, emerged with determination, but Ivory Coast’s Krasso had different plans.

The Al Nassr midfielder fired a well-executed shot beyond the goalkeeper on the turn, securing a comfortable victory for the hosts.

This encounter marked the first-ever meeting between Ivory Coast and the African Wild Dogs.

The win extends Ivory Coast’s remarkable record, securing a 13th consecutive victory in AFCON opening matches.

Meanwhile, Guinea-Bissau’s goal drought in AFCON continues, now standing at a record-extending eight matches without a goal.

Ivory Coast’s next challenge in the group stage will be against Nigeria, while Guinea-Bissau is set to face Equatorial Guinea.
