Alex Iwobi has said he does not regret choosing Nigeria over England, but has admitted it was not an easy choice to leave his ‘comfort zone’.

Iwobi represented England at various junior and youth levels, but chose to play for Nigeria at senior level and made his official debut in March, in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt in Kaduna.

The 20-year old is preparing to play a starring role for the Super Eagles in their World Cup qualifier against Zambia on Sunday and even though he is yet to feature prominently for Nigeria, he has however, more or less become a key member of the Super Eagles and while he says he doesn’t regret the decision, he admitted it might be tougher for some other players of Nigerian descent with dual nationality.

“There’s a lot of Nigerian players in the UK and everywhere and I guess the decision (to choose Nigeria) is difficult because of where you are raised,” he said.

“Such as me, I was raised in England and I was playing for England before and I was comfortable playing in that country and you don’t really want to leave your comfort zone.

“There are a lot of talented Nigerian players in the UK, but it’s whether they are ready to leave their comfort zone, which is something I had to do and I am not regretting and hopefully we will have a few more Nigerians playing for their country real soon.”
