The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has voiced concerns over the management of the ₦250 billion allocated to the newly established South East Development Commission (SEDC), stressing the need for accountability and transparency in the fund’s disbursement to ensure the region’s growth.

In a statement issued by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group urged political stakeholders involved in the commission’s operations to ensure the funds are used strictly for developmental projects in the South East. The SEDC, which is led by Dr. Emeka Nworgu as chairman and supervised by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in his role as the Senate Committee Chairman on the Commission, is expected to spearhead infrastructural and economic transformation in the region.

IPOB emphasized that the money should be directed toward projects that will significantly enhance economic activities and improve the standard of living in the South East.

“If this information is true, we call on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and those handling this money to ensure it is fully utilized for the development of Alaigbo,” IPOB stated.

The organization outlined critical areas where the funds should be allocated, including the construction of roads, the renovation of healthcare facilities, electricity generation, the establishment of free trade zones, the development of industrial parks, and programs aimed at empowering the youth.

IPOB stressed that projects should be equitably distributed across all states in the South East to prevent marginalization and ensure inclusive growth.

Additionally, the group cautioned against diverting the funds to non-essential expenditures, emphasizing that only projects with a direct and lasting impact on the region’s development should be prioritized.

IPOB called for transparency in all financial dealings related to the commission and insisted that key figures, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Dr. Benjamin Kalu, and SEDC Chairman Dr. Emeka Nworgu, should be held accountable for the proper execution of the fund’s objectives.

“The success of the South East Development Commission will be measured by its ability to deliver meaningful projects that benefit the entire region,” IPOB stated.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring the commission’s activities to ensure that the allocated funds are effectively utilized.

As expectations rise regarding the implementation of the SEDC’s initiatives, many in the region will be watching closely to see how the funds are managed and whether they translate into tangible development.
