The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially published the ‘Notice of Elections’ for the upcoming bye-elections resulting from resignations or demises of members in both the National and State Houses of Assembly, as well as court-ordered rerun elections.

The notice, signed by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, highlights the electoral body’s commitment to conducting transparent and lawful elections in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

“In accordance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, and in line with the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Bye-Elections and Court-Ordered Rerun Elections scheduled for 3rd February 2024, the Commission today published the Notice for the elections,” the statement reads.

The bye-elections are a result of the resignation or demise of members of the National and State Houses of Assembly, and court-ordered rerun elections stemming from the 2023 General Election, as directed by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals.

A total of 35 constituencies are currently affected by these court-ordered elections, with three covering entire constituencies, while others involve specific Polling Units.

Both categories of elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously in all affected constituencies on Saturday, 3rd February 2024.
