Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) has officially assumed duty as the Administrator of Rivers State, following his swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The appointment comes in response to the ongoing political crisis in the state, which prompted President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency earlier this week.

President Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule in Rivers State was driven by escalating tensions between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, a conflict that the President described as undermining the well-being and democratic benefits of the state’s citizens.

Speaking to journalists shortly after his inauguration, Vice Admiral Ibas outlined his primary focus: restoring peace, security, and stability to Rivers State.

“Mr. President made it very clear in his broadcast that the main issue is maintaining law and order. For any meaningful progress to occur in Rivers State, this is the most critical task. I intend to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure we bring peace, order, and stability to the people and government of Rivers State, and by extension, Nigeria at large,” Ibas stated.

Ibas’s appointment is expected to last six months, providing him with the authority to manage the affairs of Rivers State until a lasting resolution to the crisis is achieved. The nation watches closely as the new administrator begins his mission to restore calm and governance to the troubled region.
