‘I Have No Choice But to Obey’ – Afe Babalola Drops Criminal Charges Against Dele Farotimi After Ooni’s Intervention

The founder and chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has dropped all criminal charges against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, following the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other prominent traditional rulers.

The dispute stemmed from allegations made by Farotimi in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, where he accused Aare Babalola of corrupting the judiciary. The ABUAD founder had taken legal action in response to the claims.

Addressing journalists on Sunday, Aare Babalola confirmed the withdrawal of the charges, attributing his decision to respect for Yoruba traditional institutions.

“I have no choice but to obey the commandments of the traditional institutions,” Babalola said. “The statement of an Oba in Yoruba tradition from time immemorial is a command.”

He reflected on his career and integrity, stating, “I rejected an oil block, defended the EFCC law, and also rejected ministerial nominees twice. I wonder why anyone would just wake up and try to rubbish all I have laboured for. I have nothing to gain from his imprisonment. I am happy each time I give.”

The Ooni of Ife, who had earlier appealed to Babalola, praised him for his contributions to the development of the Yoruba race, Nigeria, and the global community.

“We all came together to discuss the matter with him, and he gave full respect to the Obas and agreed,” Oba Ogunwusi said. “Aare Afe Babalola has proven to the world that he cherishes his name, and the world has heard him loud and clear. Dele Farotimi is your son. As Yoruba elders, when our children offend us, after a little spank, we also pardon such children.”
