Cassandra Bankson, a makeup artist who posted a video to her YouTube channel last year explaining how she was diagnosed with having only one kidney and two vaginas, said she had struggled with pain and mysterious extra periods for years.
“When we got the test results back, the doctor said I only had one kidney and flippantly added that I have two vaginas — as she suspected,” Bankson told Barcroft TV. She said the condition, called uterus didelphys, causes “a complete separation [of the v**ina] into two different cavities.”
“I guess I’m twice the woman I thought I was,” she recalled joking to her mother after being diagnosed last year. Bankson said she had struggled with pain since she was younger and had often experienced two periods in a single month. “Ever since I was younger, even without knowing about this condition, I’ve gone to the doctor because I was bleeding for 23-28 days and I would have two periods a month,” she said. “Or I would have crippling cramps, I couldn’t move — or my bowels would just not want to behave because the cramps were so bad and mood swings.”
Dr. Dana Harris, a New York physician, said many women with the condition don’t know about it. “A lot of women don’t even know they have this condition and find out when they’re pregnant,” Harris said. “So it’s possible it won’t even bother her in a s*xual way. There’s a possibility there could be some issues getting pregnant but those can be dealt with.”
