Val Kilmer, the celebrated actor known for his roles in Top Gun and Batman Forever, has passed away at the age of 65. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he died of pneumonia on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, surrounded by family and friends.

Born in California, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 but later recovered. Despite his initial reluctance to accept the role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun (1986), it became one of his most iconic performances. Years later, he actively pursued a return to the franchise, lobbying for a role in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which became his final on-screen appearance.

Kilmer’s personal life was equally high-profile, with past relationships involving stars such as Cindy Crawford, Angelina Jolie, Carly Simon, and Cher. He was married to British actress Joanne Whalley, whom he met while filming Willow (1988). The couple had two children before their divorce in 1996.

Beyond his role as Batman in Batman Forever (1995), Kilmer won acclaim for his portrayal of rock legend Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991). His diverse filmography includes True Romance, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Heat, where he played the skilled criminal Chris Shiherlis. He also left a lasting impression as Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993).

During the 1990s, Kilmer was among Hollywood’s highest-paid actors. Renowned critic Roger Ebert once wrote that Kilmer deserved recognition as “the most unsung leading man of his generation.” His career began with the 1984 comedy Top Secret! before starring in Real Genius (1985), just a year before Top Gun made him a household name.

Kilmer’s legacy in Hollywood remains significant, remembered not only for his memorable performances but also for his undeniable dedication to his craft.
