The former Reds defender recounted the horror of facing the Nigerian in past Merseyside derbies and labelled him as a ‘massive difference’ ahead of Saturday’s game.

The 38-year-old hailed the impact of the Nigerian to the Black Cats and believes he has what it takes to trouble the Red at Anfield.

“There’s been one man who has come in and changed it – and it’s Victor Anichebe,” Carragher said on
Skysports’ Monday Night Football.

“He’s been a massive difference.

“I don’t think there’s anyone better with their back to goal than Anichebe.

“Backing into a centre-back, getting the ball to his feet – I played against him and he’s an absolute nightmare,” he concluded.
