“Go and Uphold The Rule of Law,” Tinubu urged Rivers Leaders

President Bola Tinubu has called on all political figures in Rivers State to prioritize adherence to legal principles in order to foster peace and prosperity. During a meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa with leaders from the Niger Delta, under the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Tinubu emphasized the critical role of respecting judicial decisions in maintaining democracy and harmony. “Respect for the judiciary is crucial in upholding democracy and fostering harmony,” Tinubu stated, according to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The President’s appeal comes amidst the ongoing political dispute between former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and current Governor Sim Fubara. A recent Supreme Court ruling favored a faction of the state assembly aligned with Wike, reinstating 27 lawmakers and challenging Fubara’s authority. While Governor Fubara has pledged to comply with the court’s decision, calls for his resignation or impeachment have emerged from certain groups.

Tinubu advised the Niger Delta leaders to adopt a broader, more selfless approach, focusing on the region’s political and economic well-being, and to ensure that judicial interpretations of the Constitution are respected. “Nigeria is a nation governed by the rule of law,” Tinubu stated, stressing the importance of upholding legal frameworks. He expressed confidence in the judiciary, acknowledging the possibility of human error but affirming the finality of court rulings.

The President urged the delegation to facilitate the swift implementation of court decisions in Rivers State, calling for both private and public efforts to counsel Governor Fubara. “Go back home and take charge of peace,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to community development and projects that benefit citizens.
He also stated that the people of Rivers State should not suffer because of political issues, and that they must be protected. Tinubu also commended the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission, and reinforced the importance of community development in the region.
