Social media users worldwide were left frustrated today as Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread outage, leaving thousands unable to access their accounts on the Meta platform.

Reports of the outage flooded other social media platforms, with users expressing bewilderment and frustration over the unexpected downtime.

According to numerous complaints from users, the outage began around 3 p.m. and persisted for several hours, with many still facing difficulties accessing their accounts at the time of reporting. Users reported being automatically logged out of their Facebook accounts, and attempts to log back in were met with error messages, including “session expired” and “unexpected error.”

Amidst the outage, speculation and questions regarding the cause of the downtime spread rapidly across social media platforms.

While users eagerly awaited an official statement from Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, no explanation for the outage had been provided at the time of writing.

On platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter), users voiced their concerns and frustrations over the outage. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Anyone else’s #Facebook logged out? Can’t log back in, keeps saying session expired or unexpected error.”

Another user shared a similar experience, writing, “Got logged out of Facebook and Instagram not loading. First thought was, Are my accounts being hacked?! Luckily it’s just #facebookdown and #instagramdown.”

As users continued to grapple with the outage, many eagerly awaited updates and solutions from Meta to resolve the disruption in service.
