Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as England national team manager, following the team’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday. In a statement, Southgate said it was “time for change” and a “new chapter” for the team. His departure marks the end of an eight-year tenure, during which he led England to three semi-finals and two finals in major tournaments.

Southgate took over as manager in 2016, following a tumultuous period for the team, and has since transformed England’s fortunes. His achievements have earned him widespread praise, with Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham hailing him for making the “impossible job possible”.

Speculation is already rife about Southgate’s successor, with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, and Mauricio Pochettino emerging as potential candidates.
