In a significant political development, Daniel Asuquo, former federal lawmaker for Akamkpa/Biase and ex-PDP governorship aspirant, has defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move was publicly announced during a grand reception held by the APC at its Calabar Secretariat on Saturday.
Asuquo, affectionately known as Dansuki, hailed the current Cross River administration led by Governor Bassey Otu, describing it as “governed by God’s special people.” He confidently predicted that the APC would “sweep all polling units” in the 2027 elections, reflecting growing optimism within the party ranks.
He praised Governor Otu’s leadership style, highlighting his “commitment, hard work, openness, receptivity and generosity” as qualities that have endeared him to the people and the party. This endorsement from a former opposition figure signals increasing support for APC in the state.
Asuquo revealed that the “Obedient movement” he once led within the Labour Party has now merged into the APC, alongside other key defectors from the PDP. This coalition, he assured, will deliver an estimated 500,000 votes for both Governor Otu and President Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming elections.
“The President will for the first time in Cross River State win election overwhelmingly. With the Obedient movement collapsed into APC and with my friends from PDP, we are sure of 500,000 votes for Governor Otu and President Tinibu in 2027,” Asuquo stated.
Explaining his reasons for joining the APC, Asuquo said he wants to support Governor Otu’s administration in harnessing Cross River’s economic potential. “My decision to join the APC is to unite with Governor Bassey Otu-led administration to move the state higher with more economic power and potential,” he explained.
He also emphasized that politics is a form of service to the people. “It is very necessary to know that Politics is service. I present myself for service. Service to pay back our people, especially all those who have worked with me,” he said, expressing gratitude to APC leaders for their warm reception and promising electoral success.
APC State Chairman Alphonsus Eba praised Asuquo for following the party’s due process, including registering at the ward level. “You have become a bonafide member of our party,” Eba confirmed, adding that the reception was held with the consent of Governor Otu, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey.
This defection is expected to reshape the political landscape in Cross River State as the 2027 elections approach.
