Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stringent measures against the scourge of kidnapping, urging state governments and lawmakers to prescribe capital punishment for offenders.

Speaking during a meeting with the national women leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja, Senator Tinubu expressed deep concern over the abduction of children and women, describing the act as heart-wrenching.

In a statement by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, Senator Tinubu emphasized the need for decisive action against perpetrators of kidnapping, labeling them as “cowards.” She underscored the devastating impact of kidnapping on the nation’s future, particularly the abduction of children who represent the hope and investment of their parents.

“As a former lawmaker, I believe that anyone captured deserves capital punishment,” Senator Tinubu asserted, calling for swift and severe consequences for kidnappers. She urged mothers to rally behind this cause, emphasizing the collective responsibility to protect and preserve the future of Nigerian children.

Senator Tinubu also highlighted the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritizes opportunities for women to thrive economically, socially, and politically. She commended the role of women leaders in driving development at the grassroots level and urged them to champion empowerment and inclusion initiatives within the party and across the nation.

The meeting coincided with the 2024 International Women’s Day, during which Senator Tinubu celebrated Nigerian women for their courage, resilience, and perseverance. She reiterated the commitment of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to championing women’s causes and implementing various programs nationwide aimed at improving the lives of families.
