Mr Ifiok Abia, member of the Presidential Flood Relief Rehabilitation Committee, said the Federal Government will build hostels for Internally Displayed Persons (IDPs), in 24 states affected by floods.

Abia made this known while presenting relief materials to flood victims in Akwa Ibom in Uyo on Thursday.

According to him, the Federal Government will also build 10 solar-powered boreholes for the IDPs.

“Already, work has begun on some of the boreholes in some states while some have even been completed”, he said.

Abia listed materials donated to Akwa Ibom flood victims to include 100 bags of rice, beans, as well as cartons of sugar, tea, powdered milk and tinned tomatoes.

Others included 800 ceiling boards, 20 bags of roofing nails, 800 towels, blankets, mosquito nets, pharmaceutical products, among other items.

Deputy Governor Moses Ekpo of Akwa Ibom, urged the federal government to ensure that contractors handling the procurement and delivery of relief materials to flood victims were from the contingent states

Ekpo confirmed that materials listed to be delivered to the affected persons had been duly received by the state government.

He appealed to citizens not to build their houses on waterways to avoid being affected by flood in case of heavy rain falls.

“When you build on a water passage, it could be likened to the Biblical foolish man, who built his house on a sandy ground.

“A wise man would rather build on a ground free of water so that such building will stand the test of time.

“We have received information from weather forecasting agencies that this year’s rain will be worse and with heavier impacts than that of the last few years.

“Please ensure that you do not dump refuse on drainage because such practice will redirect the water to your house since you cannot stop water”, he said.

The deputy governor commended the federal government for its kind gesture in spite of the economic crisis.
